Drain your lower unit oil and look for a milky color (lube mixed with water)
Examine your drain and vent screws, there's a little tiny "O" ring on each of them... if they aren't there go to your marine dealer and get some.
I let my motor down yesterday to drain any water out that might have been in the lower unit, since the temperature is below freezing and will be for a while. Went out this morning and I have a small puddle of lower unit oil right where I saw the water draining yesterday. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be or some thing to check?

is most often the cause. I have dealt with that before.

First off, identify what type oil it is. On a 2 stroke in colder temps, it's common for unburned oil in the exhaust to run down and drip under the lower unit. Lots of folks assume it's lower unit oil. Just do the smell test, there's usually no mistaking the smell of gear oil. May be a good time to pull your prop anyhow. Make sure no old fishing line is behind the prop that may cut your seals. Lube the prop shaft and reinstall.
My drips oil all the time, I run 50 to 1 so it builds up a little oil. New motor calls for 100 to 1. Cannot see what they changed from the old motors that used 50 to 1. Ya give yer oil the old smell test.
Thanks for the replies. I am pretty sure now that it is just motor oil that has run down and exited through the prop. Will check it out better when things warm up some.
If its clear its gear oil. But all two strokes will have residual oil drain from power head it will be black if its real black and gummy dont worry with it
