Unfortunately I think you do have a serious problem. Probably either a rod knock or piston slap. Not much you could do except a rebuild, and with that old a motor, you might just think about upgrading.
My 1984, 60HP Evinrude has a knock in the engine when I put it in gear. It does not knock when in neutral, knock gets louder and faster as rpm increase. I checked and changed the grease in lower unit, no water in grease, grease was a little low. The problem began suddenly when my son was out fishing. Has anyone experienced a like problem? Do I have a serious problem? What elase should I check?: Any help greatly appreciated.

Sure sounds like either a rod bearing or a main bearing. It does not knock in neutral because it does not have much pressure on it....when you put it in gear the increase in pressure makes the knock show up thus the increase in rpm...more pressure and a louder knock. Probably time for either a re-build or a new outboard.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

It could be any of the things mentioned but you need to find out for sure where the knocking is coming from first. Power head or lower unit.

i had that happen when the lower unit went out the gears slipping.
on the engine check the compression on your cylinders.
