The older VRO system was a joke. I disconnected mine on my Evinrude 200 over 14 years ago. I have never looked back. The smoke at start up doesn't bother me.

    Question

Not to hijack this post but i have had a similar problem with my 1997, Johnson 115. I disconnected the VRO but at times the OIL/ Engine light comes on.What does disconnecting the 3/4/5 wire connector at the console panel do? If this is NOT done would it still cause the engine to cut out?

Reading all the other post have REALLY helped!!

When you disconnected the VRO did you disconnect the wires going to it? Not sure what wires you are refering to at the console.

Sorry had to RE-read all the other post. kinda confusing disconnect this, capp that.

Just remove the External oil tank.... cap the oil line at the oil/fuel engine intake port.....and disconnect the round VRO plug......and thats it?

If the VRO is not disconnected could it set the oil warning/ light off?
