When you turn the key over will it click or just do nothing??
Last year i developed this problem with my motor sometimes turning over and then sometimes not. Once it started i would not have any problems with it the rest of the day.
This spring i took it to have it checked out, bottom line is they put a new starter on it. But now it is starting to do the same thing all over again.
When i turn the key over to start the motor it is just dead, i have to do that a few times and then it will catch and turn the motor over until it starts.
The battery for the motor is fully charged so i don't think that is the issue.
So whats say ye.

Probably 90% of all outboard starter problems are due to bad cables, connections, or battery. Check your battery cables very carefully. The must be clean and tight. Check the base of the lugs for any signs of corrosion as they can corrode inside where you can see it. If you suspect one you can temporily jump it with a battery cable. Next comes the starter solenoid. If it clicks but doesn't start, then replace it. If it only clicks sometimes, then your switch may be going bad.

most have yellow / with red stripe wire from ignition to siliniod.
1st check make sure you have good charged battery.
2nd. check make sure all post are clean and tight.
3rd. get a cheap test light.
4th. check yellow/red stripe wire at siliniod if u dont have power there its key switch.
5th. If u have power to yellow /red stripe continue to siliniod check red wire from siliniod to starter if u dont have power to there its siliniod.
6th. If u have power from siliniod red wire to starter its bad starter. make sure you have good battery.
Hope this helps
Your battery may be to small it takes a lot of cold cranking amps to start
some of the outboards. try to get close to 1,000 cold crank amps
I had the exact same problem. What happened is the gear stayed up it the flywheel teeth while running and burned up the brushes in starter. I didn't know this the first time so I had new brushes put in the starter and it did fine the firt couple of times then burned up again. When I took it back to the shop he new right away what was rong. Most of the time when rebuilding a starter they only install new brushes, not new springs under the gear. Just to save a little money.
Take the cover off and try to get it started. Check to see if the gear comes down out of the flywheel teeth. Do this a couple of times as it will not hang up every time. If it hangs up then there's your problem. I know it is frustating getting something fixed and then having to mess with it again.

Sounds To Me Like An Ignition Switch Issue I Would Try To Ohm It Out And See What You Get Across The Key Switch Frist.
i had a simular prob. for a couple of years, replaced several ignition sw and it would still start that same thing and also i had no trim. Finally this summer i called tracker cust. ser. and he faxed me a elec. dia. of the whole boat. Traced down to a wiring harness plug located on the motor. The plug had came loose from the bracket and perodically it would not make good contact. I remounted the plug in the braacket and secured it with a wire tie and havent had the prob. since. Hope this helps.
