    Question Boat Carpeting Alternatives?


    I've acquired a 16' Duracraft aluminum boat. It had green astroturf but its mostly rotted. There are a few things I don't like about carpet.
    1) Difficulty of installation and re installation after a few years.
    2) Dufficulty of cleaning and removing barbed hooks,
    3) Soaks water and adds weight.
    Anyway I'm searching for a better way.
    How about Spray-On Truck Bed Liner?
    Some sort of rubber coating.
    I could paint it any color I want.
    Could Spray-On Truck Bed Liner be a reasonable alternative to carpet?

    I naver have used any of the bed liner materials but have read posts saying it makes the boat ALOT heavier. You might also consider a spackle paint with grit in it so it's not so slippery when wet.

    Got a boat that came with the bed liner type stuff. Easy to clean, nonslip, tough and durable but is noisy and gets very hot to the touch. I would like to find something to over lay the front, back and middle decks without adding much weight but don't really want carpet.

    FIN, I'm a bad one to ask. I don't have carpet in my fiberglass boat.
    How about a second floor of aluminum. Go to "TinBoats" and see what others are doing to their aluminum steeds.

    There is a company in Texas that has a product that is rubber and painted on. They wont sell it to the user. They want to apply it , I am sure at a fantastic price. I am looking for something like that.

    I'm thinking I might better just buy some high quality marine carpet and a gallon of glue from cabelas and do it right. Perhaps the high quality carpet will last longer and I'll wont have to do it again. I'm not very quite so the rubber surface will hurt my fishing.

    Fin, I bought a Duracraft, new, 12 years ago... After using it for 5 years I sold it to my fishing partner....The boat came with vinyl on the floor, decks, & sides....It still looks great...Vinyl is easy to clean, cool to touch on hot days & very durable...Cabelas also sells Vinyl covering....It is also easier to install than carpet..

    Just a suggestion

    a buddy of mine fixed up an old boat and instead of carpet he bought the roll on bed liner. that was about 4 yrs agoe and it still holding up pretty good. he say all ya got to do is spray it down with a water hose to clean. it's wheather proof too.

    use hydroturf. The best thing for putting in aluminum boats. Soft, does not hold water, durable, lightweight. You can get on their website and buy seconds sometimes. Save some money and glue it down with spray adhesive versus buying it with adhesive backing.

    Barbed hooks dont get hung up in Marine Grade Carpet, there are no loops.
    Water doesnt soak in marine grade carpet, it has a rubber backing.
    Marine grade carpet lasts 5 years, longer if you cover the boat when not in use.
    Carpet is easy to install.


    Trouble with spray on truck liner is heat, your boat will be too hot to sit in, let alone stand on in the sun. Plus liner offers no cushioning for the feet, knees, legs. Kind of like fishing in the middle of an asphalt parking lot on a hot summer day. If you can bear the heat, and your feet, legs, and knees dont get sore it would be a great idea. Vynal floor covering might be a better option if you dont mind the hard floor. Although its no easier to install than carpet.
