    Default White perch run

Tried my hand at white perch today. And although it was beautiful and warm off the water the river was windy and cold enough for me to wear my coat the whole time. I wasnt able to get bloodworms but did dig worms from the yard and went down to the bulkhead and scooped some grass shrimp.

Also had some gulp bloodworms and a bag of fishbites from croaker fishing. Did a lot of experimenting and came to this conclusion, gulp bloodworms are worthless for everything but catfish and the fishbites were no better. The perch wanted real bloodworms more than everything else and although I did catch 25 perch it was tough going. They prefered the grass shrimp over the garden worms but I did catch them on both. Really fun to go to another river and try my luck. On top of the 25 perch of which I kept only 5 I caught 6 cats to 27 inches. Pretty sure they were blue and flatheads. Check out this picture, the rail that its laying on is 8 inches wide, that thing almost stole my rod as I was jigging with another.

Great report with lots of interesting information on bait preferences. I prefer real bloodworms when the water is this cold, if you can find them. Thats defineately not a flathead, I would say its a blue cat. I haven't caught one yet on the eastern shore but am sure its only a matter of time.

Steve, I thought that was a blue. The flatheads were longer, not as fat and brown colored. Still pretty big like 18 inches or more. I did get that giant on the gulp blood worms so if that is of interest they work for cats. I caught another blue on the tiniest grass shrimp, i mean that shrimp was smaller than a number 4 j hook. Amazing that those fish can find something nearly invisible in that murky water. I also marked huge schools of fish but couldnt get them to bite. Maybe shad or herring im guessing.

Very nice! Question for you guys. Where is a good spot on land to fish for white perch in the area? I mean Delaware Maryland nanticoke river wise. Many of my old spots are now no trespassing and I miss the feeling of nice large perch in my bucket.
