Well, sir, from one 50-some-odd-year beginner to you, I think is is a matter of preference of the (1) fish and then the (2) fisherman.

If you cannot fish live bait, then learn all there is about jig fishing, or rooster tail fishing, or crankbait fishing or spider rigging. It's all a matter of preference.

I like jugs but, I use minners also. My grandkids use minners and catch about as many as I do. Live bait or dead bait it's the fishing that is important!! Have fun with the slabbers.

I look at it from a sportsmans point of view
Ya dont hunt deer over a feeder do ya? Wheres the sport in that
Its the same fishing, lures are for sport and minnows are for putting food on your table
I see alot of guys tipping jigs with minnows. Best of both worlds?
    No
It's just plain cheating yourself of the complete sportsmans gratification...
Especially in tournaments, the true sportsmen feels cheated with the standings and really doesn't recognize the baitman as a measureable opponent...
    Yall know it's true
I get a great amount of satisfaction from the lure as opposed to baiting
I also have more respect for lure fishermen in general, than someone with a bucket full of minnows, maybe because the bucket represents the lack of knowledge or confidence Thats just the way i feel...
I can plan a trip any-time and any-where, never being altered by a bait stores hours :D Can minnow fishermen do that?
    NO
An empty bucket means time to go home And that aint cool

I like everything you've said here... a lot of truth in it, besides the economical aspect of fishing jigs vs. minnows, I personally find a more sense of accomplishment catching them on jigs... besides I don't have the patience required to sit and watch until my bait is taken, if I do that i might as well be catfishin.

I have used both and will have both with me when fishing. Having said that 98% of the time I am fishing a jig and the other 2% it is tipped with a minnow if the bite is really slow.

For just relaxing and fishing use a jig. Less hassles.

Sportmanship, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Some fly fisherman think that anybody who uses a spinning reel is one notch above a Neanderthal.

As long as they abide by the regs, who cares how anybody fishes?

I don't think catman knows that. See his post above (post #3.)

As I noted before, some fly fishermen would think your use of lures is just a lack of knowledge or confidence.

No, but quite a few fishermen on this board sink "crappie condos", mark them with GPS and then fish over them. As a matter of fact, there's an entire board here devoted to it. I don't know how you feel about that, but I have absolutely no problem with it.

You can make the case that fishing with little or no electronic gear is more sporting than using a big boat loaded with GPS, sonar, etc. I wouldn't say that. In fact, I'm more than a little amazed with the caliber of electronics available today. I'm also amazed at fishermen's ability to use that equipment to find fish.

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm picking on you. That's not my intention. It's just that this whole "sportsmanship" concept is kind of a sore spot with me. I've fly fished long enough to see plenty of snobbery on that side. I just hate seeing it seep into crappie fishing.

It just amazes me to no end that there are fishers who think they are 'elite' because the don't use live bait and try to down grade those that do. Just maybe those that don't do well with live bait just don't know how. As with any tactic, there is more to it than you could possible imagine. <*)}}}><

    couldnt agree more.

Who are you to tell me or anybody else that the way we catch fish isn't sportsman like? Sportsman like by WHOS standards? Yours? Mine? The guy down the street? Bull.

Personally, I haven't used shiners in years. I like jig fishing. However, there are times that shiners outfish jigs. I know this, anyone fishing a major tournament IS USING SHINERS! They all use them. Even if they fish a jig they have it tipped with a shiner. Period.

The guys fishing 200 years ago with a bamboo cane pole and a small stick as a float and a sharp ROCK for a hook might think you were a GOOBER for using jigs! Heck, they didn't have plastic back then, didn't need it. Oh, and they also used shiners! Not very sportsmanlike of them I reckon. They should have fashioned a leaf with some natural epoxy resin and painted it with the dye from some root and made a jig I guess.

Just trying to point out that even you would have to admit that this could be viewed several different ways. MANY hunters DO hunt over feeders. That is a topic for another board, but I can tell you this, hunting over a feeder or using a shiner doesn't guarantee JACK CRAP!

Ken, one thing you have to consider when you talk about releasing shiners is the South is very different from the North in it's waterways. You can launch a boat right here at my shop, 200 miles from the coast and drive your boat to Russia, China, Australia, or, go the other way and drive north to Mississippi. All our waterways (and there are thousands of them) are connected and NOTHING stays seperated. NOTHING. Even dumping shiners in a gravel pit gets them in the river the first time it floods and it has absolutely no ill effect at all. Not saying the same is true where you are. Again, just another reminder that just becasue people don't do things like someone else, doesn't make them an idiot or uneducated.
