I've used a rubberband for depth marker since i was a kid. drop it down then put rubberband on the spool. If a big fish strips drag the rubberband will not break your line like the clip will.

If your are talking about the clear plastic clip that use to come on all spinning reels, than that is a new thing for me. I always thought it was to hold the line on the spool until you bought it and when you got home you just discarded it. That use to be on the directions when I first started buying spinning equipment. Now most of the reels comes with a slit on the reel to hole the end of the line until you tie a lure or hook on it. They was never as wide as the spool it came on from what I can remember. EB
DO-GOODER EXTRADINAR :p
Most all spinning reels have the little triangle (usually pastic) next to the spool. I have always used this as a generic depth gauge, but it works. I don't use them so much when casting, but almost always use them when vertical jigging. I figured it out by mistake, not sure anyone actually taught me this one. I have even told some of my buddies that have fished for 40+ years and alot of them never knew it.

Caught so many fish today my thumb is sore from clicking the counter.
That will be a HOOT when you get into the stripers/hybrid or spots. get you some!!
That is a good tip. I will have to try that the next time that I am vertical jigging!
