They tell me that MS has passed the life Jacket Law saying you have to have it on if your big motor is cranked

Why the ? I don't think that is such a bad decision. Just get a comfortable pfd. I know...just what we need...big brother telling us how to live...but it may just save your life. Mustang make some very nice pfds that are very comfortable and they won't inflate until submerged; they can be worn in a rain storm and still won't inflate. They are about $240, but that is cheap insurance. One draw back is that they must be serviced every 5 years and they are mechanical and I suppose like all things mechanical there is a slight risk of failure. On the other hand, there are some very nice and comfortable pfd that are foam and one can get those for around $50 and up. Just rembember, any pdf is pretty useless if it is not worn.
Everyone in my boat wears one if the engine cranks up. If you get in my boat you'll agree or they don't go.

Its not that wearing a pfd is unwise, its that they are forcing you to wear one. Its like the seatbelt law. Sure, you should wear one, but we should have the choice. Is this a free country or not. Its getting hard to tell. Even after all these years of having a seatbelt law in NY, it still irritates me. I think its mainly a good excuse to write $50 tickets.
Good things come to those who bait.
I understand the reasoning of resentment and one of those that fought
wearing a seat belt or helmet on a bike for years. Using common sense,
I finally realized that law or no law it was a good idea under most situations.
But, like most things, there are those that want independent choice on
things but as a former deputy, you only have to see the phyical damage
to a body not strapped in to see the wisdom in that. I think the choice
is up to person but what about the cost of medical expenses and services
envolved in those situations? The person injured pay for the services that
lack of reasoning brings on? Look at ones that drown and all the manpower
needed just to recover the body. If their family doesn't have the means
to pay for this, who is stuck with the bill? Tax payers of course!
I had a brother in law forced through a couple inch wide opening in a
windshield where every bone was broken and his insides forced out his
rectum and a seat belt and air bag would have made all the difference.
I had a sister in law fall off a boat and hit her head with no one aware
and drowned.
Same with alcohol and driving and boating. We all have seen the mess
this ongoing problem is. Laws are not for those with common sense but
a blanket shotgun move to cover all those too knuckle headed to think
and use reasoning. JMHO..........
The new law is on the Corp of engineers lakes Arkbutla,Sardis,Enid and Grenada and so on. It says if your boat is under power(Big Motor) you must wear a life jacket and if your boat is under 16feet you must wear a PFD at all times. If your boat is 16feet or over you only have to wear it when the big motor is running. So have fun and be safe!

Well let's do it this way then,if you fall out of the boat and drown, then you don't get to collect your life insurance and your family has to pick up the tab for someone to recover you.... spent 15 years as a rescue diver in the fire dept.and it's no fun to recover a body with the family standing on the bank. Then comes the good part of having your family member identifying your remains....Ranks right up there with having a root canal with no deadening....
I would agree with you, but then we would both be WRONG !!!!
Louisiana has passed a law where if in a boat with a tiller controlled motor under 16', you must wear a PFD and the kill cord. Over 16' with a tiller controlled motor you must wear the kill cord. Boats with a steering wheel or used for commercial activities are exempt from the new law.
