    Exclamation Yes, Stingray .....

there's good reasons why PVC is used. First and foremost - it's "almost" impossible to snag a jig/hook on PVC. This makes it somewhat better than wood stakes, rubber tubing/hose, or some natural cover stuff (like cane, bamboo, brush).
PVC can be found, for free, at "housing development dumpsters" or retail store "scrap piles". Metal pipes would be quite heavy, and costly (for fittings/pipes) if you had to purchase them. Plus, as you mentioned, they would rust out - eventually. This would make them considerably more difficult to "remove" or "move (if you wished to do so) ... and, once the rusting process set in, they'd become hazardous to line. It would, also, be more easily snagged on (once rusting/biodegrading began).
The whole point of using PVC, is that it "would" last - possibly for generations - making it economically viable to spend the money for these "structures", once ... rather than having to "replace" them every few years.

On some lakes, it is illegal to put "man-made structures" anywhere under the water. Some lakes require permits. In some lakes, it's OK ... as long as you don't create a "hazard" to navigation or people. I implore all our members to do this the "legal" way, following any & all state laws regarding the placement of "cover/attractors" in their waters. ..........cp

pappy. A basket ball keeps it's shape with no aircutting the holes without cutting up the ball is the trick. After you start putting in the pvc it holds up. Some air has to be trapped in there. I used a cement block to weight it down. It might even be modified to hold air to make it float then you could suspend it at any depth. How quick will we see one of these floating stars on sale? lol

Smitty - I grasp the idea of the "basketball" as the "hub" ... but, once a hole is put in the ball, it deflates - do you fill the ball with "quickcrete", after inserting the PVC rods ? (would that negate any need for concrete block "feet" to sink/anchor the "star" ??)

Stingray - not all of us are "mechanically inclined" enough to build their own ... not all of us are "home owners", with the space & tools to build such devices ... not all of us are privy to close proximity of the supplies & articles needed to make devices of "any" nature - those people may see the price of a "kit" as being "worth it".

The bottom line is - the device works ... as do the "spinoff" versions, and so do most of the "other" attractor devices -- but, only if placed in the proper place/depth. ..............luck2ya'll .........cp

I understand that there are good reasons for using PVC. I was just wondering if it there would be any reason why you couldn't make one by welding up a bunch of metal tubing. The reason I brought this up is because I have a welder and access to a big pile of scrap tubing. I know it would be heavier & a lot more trouble to get it out into the water, but it has the big advantage (in my case) of being 100% free. I wonder how long it would last before it rusted away. Surely at least three or four years, but maybe I'm just being optimistic.
