Most lead head jigs 1/16oz will sink at a certain rate. Depending on the line diameter and type the jig will sink about 1ft per second. If you are casting a jig out and watch the jig hit the water you can count down One One Thousand, Two OneThousand and the jig will sink down Two Feet Deep approx. Then if you engage the reel and start SLOWLY reeling the line back in the jig may stay at the two feet deep depth. Fan cast the area this way and then repeat the fan casting but next time count down to four. Repeat and next time count down to 6. This way you can cover the entire area around the boat and all depths. By reeling slowly I mean one turn of the handle ever 4 seconds or so. Just barely turning the handle will make the jig come back to the rod and maintain the starting depth most of the way back to the rod.
    Nice Job, Moose!

New2Crappie, If you will try that with the 1/8 oz. Beetlespins at your Scottsburg lake, I think you'll have a blast. If you "count-down" to lets say "8" and get into the grass. the next cast count down to only "7"....etc.

    Default Scottsburg Reservoir

New2Crappie, her is an aerial photo of Scottsburg Reservoir, the area just off of the points I mark is fairly shallow 6-8 ft. Once the weed growth evolves, which should be by now, you might have to move off the points toward the center of the lake and fish the 8'-16' depths. Whatever it takes to fish close to,or over the edge of the existing weedline. Even if you move to the deeper area, count down your BS's, like Moose explained starting a foot or two deep. The almost always dingy water, and wave action many times will put the fish close to the surface. If you happen across some brown/chartruese BS's, pick up a few....when the dog days of summer sets in that color seems to work best.
