The fishing tackle business is obviously a niche where a "mom and pop" store could easily compete with Walmart.

You cant compete head-to-head with Wally they have too much buying power, if you are an independent retailer you must buy smart in volume, plus closeouts overuns & such. the way you truly compete with e'm is SERVICE / KNOWLEDGE for the fisherman, the old way of doing business in tackle has not changed, clean a reel, spool line, repair a rod tip, while he's waiting he will brouse your store usually picking up extra items. Keep e'm coming back & your door says open. Wal-Mart is simply neglecting adressing your needs....remember the question at the service station-clean your winshield / check the oil?

I don't even go to Walmart. Academy and Sportmans have what I need.

I know a local tackle shop that's run exactly like that. This guy has been in business for years, and he's within spitting distance of two Walmart superstores.

I make most of my own stuff so they don't carry parts for diy!!! And when when even ordering crankbaits is cheaper on line than in a store that's pretty bad. We have a Dick's sportings goods and it's got lots of tackle but no knowledgable anglers working there.

The tying section used to be okay so if you needed chenille or thread they had it but now they've killed that too.

Couple of specialty fly tying shops but prices are BIG TIME.

    I love Wal Mart......

I called HQ about the fish tackle draw down. For most stores, the sales are seasonal. Paris,Tn store still has a good supply of fish stuff (6 isles full).

New stuff will be out next spring for all stores. They just got rid of stuff that did not move. They do this every year.

Good business sense, but kinda sucks for us.
