I'm not sure, but I'd say it's illegal in Ohio. Everything else is...Anyway, what happens to that "scout fish" when it goes into the brush and gets hung up? That fish wasn't big enough for you to keep or you wouldn't have thrown him back in, with or without the float hanging from his back. So why hang a leash from his back and send him to get tangled up and tie? I somehow doubt the scout would go directly back to the school anyway. Wouldn't he just go straight to the closest cover and hide out till things are safe? Plus, chances are once you find that first crappie, you can find the rest of them in short order. Why stick a hook in it's back? Just my opinion. I have heard of people doing this with balloons, but never seen it done. I'm with most everyone else. I would never do it, or condone it. I put it right there in the same category as the yo-yo, which was already debated on here.

I don't need electronic gadgets to find and catch fish. Only gadget I need is my old Zebco 33 rig.

Don't get me wrong. I love my gadgets, but, I could get by without them.

I am 3 decades older than the first "fishfinder" (Lowrance greenbox). Heck, I taught Noah dead reckoning.

There are still a few of us around that could go out and catch fish without the use of nicads, etc.

This issue, like most other issues, is not open to someone's condoning it or not condoning it. You can gig em with a frog gig if you like........ But I don't. It's all as simple as that.
Anyway, thanks for the write up!

I'm old-school when it comes to finding fish. No gadgets here. Only thing running off the battery is my little old Minn-Kota. If they ain't in their usual haunts, I'll troll around some other likely areas and eventually I find them. When I go to a new lake, I start with a topo map, then maybe talk to a few locals and generally can find-em.

Maybe condoning or not condoning is not really the right way of putting it. But IN MY OPINION, placing a hook with a 10 feet line and bobber in the back of a fish, especially a game fish like crappie, is a digusting way to track a school. Totally unsportsmanlike IN MY OPINION. Heck, if you don't want opinions, don't post on a public forum. No, I would NOT condone it, if it were up to me to do so. But since you have so aptly pointed out that it is not my place, at least you have my opinion. I'm sure I'm not alone.

No 2 people fish the same way. If it's legal, then go for it. Who am I to say any different? I prob won't try it, but it's an interesting concept.

I think that running a pack of dogs thru the woods so's they'll herd the deer to the men on the other side is a silly way to hunt. But the folks who do it don't think so. My opinion don't matter too much to anyone else but me.
