Keep a 5 gal bucket filled at all times, let it sit for a few days and the chlorine should dissapsate, this will be your changing water
A few days, max without doing anything. I'd change the water, make sure to take any dead ones out, ect. If you're near/on the lake, sinking them works great. Just put them in a closed minnow bucket that has holes (the trolling ones work great), tie a few bricks to it, and drop it in about 4-5 foot deep water. Tie to a pier or something if possible to get them back eaisly.

Mine live in a buckit just long enuf to get to dieing age. I keep em going a long time though. Along with the cool fresh water, I bless mine, feed em Moon Pies, and they like music-I can git an extra week outta em if I give em some ZZ Top or Led Zeppelin to listen to.

I have had them live in a bucket for a couple weeks in the garage, change some of the water out when it starts getting funky and keep any dead ones picked out. I also have to keep my son from dumping fish food in there for them.
