Have to disagree with some of you. I dont do well with hi-vis line. I also dont care for braids for crappie fishing. I've tried them. I catch a greater number of fish on 4lb clear than any other type of line. I still have a setup for deepwater perching with fireline but thats for 50ft water and i need less strech for that. I also use braids for walleye trolling.
I fish lake Keowee in SC and it is a very clear lake and did notice I did better with 4# leader, but I got some of that new stren microfuse(i think that was the name of it) in 8/3 and fished half my rods with it and the other half 8#test mono with 4# test leaders and did not really notice a difference in the bite. But that is night fishing where you usually don't get hung up. Sometimes get a good size cat while night fishing and was thinking if the braid worked out I would not worry as much about breaking off. So far I like it. If I got hung up a lot the mono leader makes sense.
i use spiderwire stealf ,no leader
If your afraid your missing fish, esp in clear water I would use a 4 or 6 lb flourocarbon leader, still has the same no stretch sensitivity.
fishing and filleting; that's how I roll!:D
I recently set up my spider rig and haven't gotten everything consistent. I ran 6 poles with jigs and had everything mixed up to see what worked. I have one 9 foot WM pole with a Pfluger ultralite reel and 4 lb mono. (It's my small stream wading also) I have two B & M 10 ft with spinning reels and MR Crappie 4 lb camo. I have two B&M 12 ft with bait casting and fireline stealth 4 lb. One of the Zebco bill dance crappie poles (12 ft) with Mr Crappie hi viz. Fished all of them for a week under different conditions and kept up with the results and it was almost identical. As I started to switch the jigs to the colors that worked and to the right depth it was almost no difference I can see. I fished one afternoon in the bushes and used the 12 ft with the braid and it worked fine. Broke off and went to one of the camo line 10 ft I had set up for backup and didn't change a thing. The water was slightly stained. You could see the jig about 2 to 3 feet deep.
Now I think I'm confused. I don't know which way to go.

If it works for you, dont change a thing.
Don't be confused, sounds to me like you're catching fish across the board - regardless of the line you're using. If whatever you're doing is working, that means it ain't broke, so don't fix it.
Main reason I use the leader on my rod with braid on it is because I also use that rod for trout. The second reason is because I'm cheap and if I'm gonna break off on a hang-up, I'd rather lose a foot or so of mono or flouro than the more expensive braid in a length that could be close to as long as the water is deep.
I haven't known anybody that has been able to say that using a leader for crappie makes enough of a difference to start using one (other than in high pressure, gin-clear water, and then it's a maybe), so I'm going to go on the premise that it really boils down to personal preference.
