This is only my opinion and I have not fished out west. Ever......but

I think Sardis Mississippi or Enid Mississippi would probably be #1 being that the fish are guarenteed to be hawgs. (world record crappie was caught in Enid so you can't go wrong there). The whole state and each Lake is beautiful. Campgrounds are A+ top notch. People are amazingly friendly, and for some reason the spawn is always earlier than everywhere else.

5 Years ago, Okeechobee was the hands down winner, 5 years from now KY lake will be. (if they get that whole black crappie thing under controll.)

You can go wrong with Mississippi Enid or Sardis for sure.
That is one hot cooridor with the addition of Grenada and a few smaller lakes in the regions with numbers and size.

I'm kinda partial to Mississippi since I live here. We have Sardis, Enid, Grenada, and Ross Barnett- and all of these lakes have great crappie fishing opportunities. 2-3 pound fish are not uncommon on any of these lakes. Grenada probably has the best opportunity for 3+ pounders.

Just moved back to TN 5 years ago and retired. This is where I grew up, but I had lived away for most of the last 30 years or so. A lot had to do with family being here, but having said that, the cost of living played a large part and it was much better here than most places. If that is a concern, there is a higher sales tax here, but no wage or income tax. There is no advalorum or personal property tax and property taxes are very reasonable. In addition the fishing here is usually really good and depending on where you locate it is not a bad trip to Northern Mississippi or Alabama. Lots of choices.

And I'm not even a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Of the lakes I've fished, Weiss Lake in Alabama is my favorite. You get good numbers along with great average size. Might not catch that 3 pounder all the time, but you have a great chance of getting into a mess of 1.5 pounders and 2 pounders. I haven't been to Grenada, Sardis, any of the Mississippi lakes yet, but a trip there is not far off. But for now, Weiss is king for me, followed in a close second by Kentucky lake.
