I am going to tell you a bad one.....................I purchased GULP ALIVE 3' shads today (4/1/08). Not 2 hours ago. A very reliable source told me he was killing the Crappie on them. So I bought some, no big deal. I bought the smaller bucket firsy and thought the price was $9.99. When my buddy Dave says something works..........it works! So I took em up to the counter and they were $19.99!!!!!!!!! I told Dave, I would only use two, so he could buy the rest if they didn't work. He assured me they work GREAT and I wasn't going to need to sell him the remainders. So I went back and bought the bigger bucket for $39.99!!!!!! It's funny how easily he talked me into buying a bigger bucket and this post was on here today. He called me again when I left the bait shop and told me 'I was an easy sell and now he didn't have to bring his when he fishes with me!!!!! And everyone thought I was the cheap one wanting some GAS MONEY!!!!!! Good friends and laughs are something money can't buy though! And these are my good old retired buddies that just love to Razz the heck out of me! Please God let these things work!!
Caught so many fish today my thumb is sore from clicking the counter.
lol just conviently leave yours at home when you go fishing with him lol... i have the 3 inch smelt and 3 inch shad and they worked great for bass and walleyes but seemed a lil big for crappie. but i did put regular 2 inch jigs in the juice and slam them with it..saves me a ton of money instead of paying for all the crappie nibbles i used to use
never trust friends on april 1st tho lol
I have been a big fan of Berkley plastics in the past, but ever since they released the Gulp and Alive lines I have taken a step back and said I'm not paying that much for their plastics. The prices are just ridiculous. I have been tempted many times to spring for a $20 bucket, but have resisted the temptation because I just don't like being taken advantage of and that is what they are doing.
I think I may buy a spray bottle of the Alive scent and try it on my regular plastics. They are releasing in late April a 2.5 inch version of the Alive Minnow. I'll have to see if they give you more in a bucket for your $20 bucks with that size and I may give a bucket of 2.5 emerald shiners a whack this year, but any public reviews I give of the Alive products will be laced with strong criticism of their prices.
They say on their website that the $20 bucket is the equivalent of 3 bags of Gulp. The Gulp bags sell for $5.49 which hold 12 baits. That is 46 cents per plastic bait, so if the numbers they proclaim on their site hold for the buckets, then the bucket will have 36 baits for $20, which is more than what Gulp costs in bags, and comes to 55 cents per plastic crappie bait. 55 cents!! Yow. They may have slightly more baits than the 32 in the 2.5 inch $20 buckets, but still thats a lot to pay.
Am I being a cheapskate? Maybe, but I'll bet it hardly costs them anything to make these baits, and could easily have charged a more reasonable price for them. If they had I probably would have already purchased several buckets, but as it is I haven't and won't. They could be making a fortune with these baits if they weren't being so greedy which is kind of funny to say, because they probably work really well, and with the current minnow situation being what it is they have the right product at the right time, but with the very wrong price. Even wooly beavertails only cost 13 cents each and BPS baits and southern pros cost about 7 - 8 cents each. Berkley Alive definitely isn't going to catch 5 times as many fish as these excellent baits. They need to rethink their prices.

Good things come to those who bait.
If it does cost them hardly anything to make them you can bet a competitor will come out with a version that costs less. Unless there is a patent, then we'll have to wait a few years.
I know the shrimp is a killer is salt water, If I find out the minnows really work I will buy them and see how they compare to live bait. It would be nice to not need minnows during the summer.
I just have not had that much luck with the small packs of Gulp.
i have no issues paying the 20 bucks.. there was bout 36 baits in there and i have reused the juice with other plastics numerous times with very good results and also got 2 free buckets cause i reported a leaky lid on one of my buckets...think of it this way grizz...buy 3 bags of gulps then add in bout 1 pint of a top of the line fish attractant and i seen fish attractants that run upwards of 10 bucks if your figuring your prices. there price is bout right on for what your getting
I think I'll stick to tubes and minnows till someone shows me how much better the gulp alive is....
well they arent better then live minnows of course but they come in handy thats for sure
I think they are a great idea. If the work and they seem to from the reports I see posted. Pstone....ya need to fish in temps less than 20* to appreciate not having to put your hands on wet minners! I have seen times that if your wet minnow hit the metal on your boat...it was stuck there. I now use jigs in the winter 90% of the time and if the alive would help me catch more and keep things dry...then I would buy it. I have a couple back of the 2" minnow grubs right now to try out on the local spec population.
