Depends on what you're doing. I wouldn't use them for casting jigs, but for spider rigging, jigging or fishing from shore, they're very useful.
I'm thinking about trying a 10 or 12' rod! Do they really help? I'd appreciate your comments!

they make a difference in the right condition like d4d mentioned
Get the net!
I like them for single jig fishing timber. And for spider rigging it helps to get the poles out from the boat and Trolling motor.
I use 16 ft spider rigging some even in say 3ft of water. Sure keeps from spooking the shallow fish.
Pete
definately... i have a couple 12 footers and they work great for trolling, spider rigging, or even fishing from shore to reach out into cover you otherwise would have to cast into...also works good if your on a boat pulling up to some fallen timber you can dink and dunk around it
I have 30+ Crappie rods and over half are over 8'. I cast, shoot docks and fish bridges with the shorter rods. For timber, brush piles, Jig/bobber and any type of trolling I use the longer rods.
Good fishing.
Yes .
In short, yes! It helps with bigger fish because it has more give, it also helps trolling to get you line out from the boat and it makes no difference if you are long line trolling or short line. I have a good number of short rods and medium rods, but I also had 4 10' rods and my newest member of the rods in my boat is a 12'. It also helps a lot if you are fishing the very shallow water and not casting, but just what I would call doodle socking.
I really like all of them and I have 3 brands, one Pro Angler, 2 B&M and 2 Wally Marshal Pro series. The 12' Wally rod is one I got yesterday from my son for my birthday and when he called the other day and ask what I wanted it was easy since I had been thinking that I wanted a 12' rod.
One thing I really like about the WM rods other than it's IM 8, is the number of guides. The 10' rods have 13 guides and the 12' has 15. I like hte B&M and Pro Angler for their back bone.

I have my first "long" rod. It's a WM 9' and not having an underspin reel (or whatever they're called) I have a baitcaster on it. Used it trolling in AL 2 weeks back and like the way it gave me a wider spread and handled fish. The reel had some small diameter braided line on it so I gave it a try. It didn't matter to the fish as I caught as many on it as I did the others, though I'm sure sunny conditions would change that. I will be getting 2 10' rods, or maybe just a different reel for this one and a 10" besides. I think they're useful and worth the investment.
Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
I thought the 10 ft. was the only rod that i needed. While spider rigging one day , my partner broke out a 16 ft. rod that I thought was going to break my rod holder. He was catching fish on the long pole and the shorter ones were zero. I would asume the fish were spooky aand the long pole reached before they spooked. Just an oppinion. I now on 14 footers and am looking at 16to18 footers. Try it you will like it.
