Default Weird or creepy finds or stories while on the water.

Ketchn started a thread with a picture of a glove floating. Very creepy. I added a post about stepping on what I thought was a drowning victim. Left me shaky. Read it on his thread. But that gave me the idea for this. Post weird or creepy thing you have seen or found while on the water. I'll start with one about a high school friend.

My friend's family had a camp on the water in the Atchafalaya River Basin. He would go there every chance he could. Loved fishing on trot lines and crabbing. Made a lot of spending money. Not once but twice he found drowning victims. Both times he tied them to his dock and called the wildlife people to get them. Ironically he lost his life in a boating accident. He was skippering a tug boat laying pipe in the marsh. His boat hit a live gas line and the gas exploded killing him and crew.

I was bank fishing for white bass on a medium size creek that has some really steep banks. Most of the old timers carried a rope with them to propel and pull yourself out of some of the prime fishing spots. I was fishing with a guy who 15 yards away from me down stream. I moved to another spot and 2 hours later the fire department and ambulance show up. Come to find out the guy fell into the creek and could not swim. He drowned and I watched them recover his body. To this very day I remember his big smile while catching white bass.

I remember stories of several people that died either getting sucked through the gates during the draw downs on a lake we used to fish or going over the spill way. Kinda spooky when you go back there to fish.

Probably been 20yrs or so, but I was at a family gathering at Oolagah lake just north of Claremore Ok. We were picnicking and swimming at the park on the north end of the dam. Those of us that were on shore were watching a boat full of people pulling a tuber and doing the usual crazy circles trying to toss the tuber. There was a person sitting on the nose of the boat while it was doing all of this and just as we were commenting on how stupid it was to be sitting there they fell off. We could see him flailing in the water as the boat circled around to get back to him, little did we know he was drowning. We could see people jumping out of the boat to try and save him but it was too late. They were a couple hundred yards away from us and there was nothing we could do. Come to find out, it was an 18yr old guy, couldn't swim and they were all drinking.

I'll never forget the State Trooper pulling up with the mother in the car and her receiving the news from the lake patrol that her son had drowned and the wailing that ensued, I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Found out the next day that they found him down river from the dam. I don't remember if he had gone through the overflow or a gate. It was a sobering feeling standing there not being able to do anything.

Water skiing and tubing with buddies about 20 years ago and at the time we were all out of the boat enjoying the water just drifting around. One of our buddies started to struggle and we all were like yea right. We kept saying come on man stop messing with us until we realized he wasn't joking. Luckily got to the boat fast enough to throw him a jacket which none of us had on.

We drifted into some really think grass growing from the bottom in probably 8 to 10 fow almost to the very top and I guess he go tangled up in it and was freaking out and going down. We are lucky to all laugh about it today!

I was a young teenager at the time. We lived 3 blocks from our small river that ran through town. I would walk to a nearby train bridge to fish under. I usually carried my pellet rifle with me to kill pesky snakes and monsters like bridge trolls. One day I was there and a gentleman joined me under the bridge so we talked a bit. Said he liked my pellet rifle. It was a fancy and pretty powerful model. He took it and shot a few pigeons. It came time to leave so I got home to find out that an inmate had escaped from the prison that is 3 blocks from my home also. In the evening it was announced that he was taken into custody under that same train bridge where we met earlier.

6am 1989 in a 16’ boat with a 35hp Johnson on Alabama river going past Parker island ferry crossing headed to catfish on the canal. Seen what I thought was a goose swimming up river falling over from 1 side to the other. Pulled up next to it and seen it was a catfish fin 2’ sticking out of the water. He was swimming at about 2mph only inches under surface. It was as wide as the boat and almost as long. It started slowly going deeper till it was gone. Almost a minute looking at it from 3’ away. No iphone camera back then but there’s stories in the local paper. 50yrs ago about Alabama power dam inspectors diving that says catfish the size of cars were at bottom of the Jordan dam. I didn’t believe it until I saw what I saw that day
