Default Time for some worm grunting

Prices are nuts here for nightcrawlers so time to do some grunting and gathering.
$4.50 a dozen or $6 for 18 from Wally world. They WW one come in this black "dirt" that is messier than any soil I've ever used.
Been a while but get a lot just by pounding the stick into the ground.
Anyone have any tricks they use for getting nightcrawlers when it has been dry?

We used to give the ground we were going to dig in a good soaking from the water hose…

I have used a set up similar to the one in the pic. First time was when I was a kid wanting to fish... Then a few years ago as the prices climbed I built another one that works well...The probes can be pushed down pretty far... but guessing if the soil is dry that far down it probably won't work. Otherwise just plug it in and wait... Worms will come up and lay on the top for collecting. (Probably not recommended from an electricians point of view, but it works Time for some worm gruntingTime for some worm grunting)Name: Screenshot_20240404-054741.jpg

Interesting, vbottom. That’s not a problem around here right now. Over 3” already for April!

Wouldn't stand on wet ground between those worm probes!

My yard is pretty void of nightcrawlers so gonna be locations where I can't really do any shocking.
Vbottom. how long do they live after the shocking?
I raise my own dew worms but they aren't quite big enough or tough enough for trolling.

Have only collected what I needed for the day in the past, but have had left overs last like any other bait I have kept. I don't think the shocking had much effect on them.

Used the worm shocker before , we homemade ours , didn’t work that great .
We did wet the yard though and ketched some pretty good once it got dark
The bestest way we we ketched them was a fresh plowed field after it rained in the dark with flashlights
And BOY howdy are night crawlers FAST …..got bested often is me …
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales
