I'm a member of a jon boat forum on Facebook. New guys always come on saying they need more speed. Many guys recommend they put 40hp on a 12-14ft flat bottom. I tell they this is rediculous advice because those boats are rated for 9.9 -20hp outboads max. I then get a flooded with responses that don't be wimp, go as big as possible, don't let the government tell you what to do, etc. I tell them a flat bottom is not built for speed and although you can go slightly over the outboard recommendation on the plate, going double over it is dangerous. It's always the young guys who want to go faster. If you want a fast boat a small flat bottom is the last platform you want to go with. Safety means nothing to them because accidents only happens to others.

I saw the seats on the front of the boat, but who can say that they were blocking his view? Maybe he is tall, maybe the driver's seat is raised (I raised mine, but for comfort), maybe the seats don't block his view. I'm not defending him as he was clearly at fault.

Assuming that was the guy who was bragging about "close your eyes" because he was going to run full out in the no-wake zone, he belongs in prison for that bull****. They're lucky someone wasn't killed.

I have a 12” Garmin over a 15” Helix on my bow but they are always folded down on my Cornfield Fishing Gear Folding Mount unless we are fishing at the bow. I went back to a bay style center console on my new boat. It’s not as comfortable running down the lake as the Storm Cat was but I have an absolutely clear line of sight while running.

This isn't equipment error blocking the boat operators view. This was Boat Operator Error operating a killing machine unintelligently at Wide Open Throttle.

This is seen all too often in the general aviation world, it is call following the magenta line. All to often pilots are lazer focused on the magenta line they forget to fly the airplane.
Way too many lives are lost because of complacency. Glad no one was injured in the accident.

Man, I see all kinds of place to comment on these posts. Guess I will start with this one. I added a 6in extension post between my Helm seat in my Tin boat and the seat itself. Made a huge difference, now I'm 6'3" tall too. I can see over Bon Temps sitting on our Yeti Cooler and the Casting seat on the bow. Without the extension I have to remove the Casting seat and lay it on the deck for a clear view running. BTW the 6in extension posts are pretty cheap, makes the Helm seat into a High Chair.

I have a Southfork 1448 rated for a 25HP. I have a 2 stroke 40 Mercury short shaft on it (this is the boat in numerous videos). Wide open it runs 33MPH. With Bon Temps sitting in front of the console we have hit 32MPH numerous times. Boat engine rating for marine equipment that is meant to be sold to a consumer (non-commercial use) is rated by the Coast Guard using engines manufactured and available today. They swamp the boat looking for "Level Flotation". Todays 4 strokes are heavier than the 2 strokes of yesteryear. I have a 25 Yamaha 4 stroke sitting in my shop stash of engines, it's every bit as heavy as the 40HP 2 Cyl 2 Stroke Mercury. Horsepower and Speed is a diminishing return in all boats including Flat Bottoms, I have built several aluminum boats all commercial use with large 2 strokes and they all get squirrelly around 50MPH. I never rigged one for my use that went over 40MPH because they took too long to slow down. A interesting side note, when a Bass Boat is on the Pad its squirrelly feeling in the seat of the pants.

As posted earlier using a 6in extension under my Helm seat allows me to see over everything. The boat operator in the wrong may have been able to see over everything but was looking at his phone or something, I'm not Excusing is Terrible operating behavior.
