Interesting, dead stick fishing is the hardest presentation for me to teach. Best wintertime tactic for us. Most have to move the jig. Once the water warms in the rivers here dead stick looses its effectiveness. A periodic slow lift & quick drop really increases the hookups.

in my travels I often "make" them bite whatever is in my pocket , that said sometimes whatever is in my pocket , they just won't bite , see it frequently in tough conditions, not so much this time of year for sure ,
one thing for certain though, I managed to lose count at 252/254/253 white bass one day using just a hook, a split shot and pc. of white bread wrapper .....such are spring fish for sure ....
was visiting a spot on a river that had a very strong run going on and no jigs and just stood out there amongst them white bass in thigh deep water and cut off bluejeans and went so far as to "try" not to ketch one every cast !
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales

An older trapper guy I know uses nothing but Beaver tail cut to the shapes he wants, they last for ever and then some.

The hair jigs sold at gas stations and bait shops around Pickwick sure don’t look like much, but have worked great for years. Last trip we had unusual muddy water, real chocolate milk, bite was not great, so I ended up adding a little more plastic trailer bulk and scratched out a mess. 3 inch curlytail is a goto for me, been hauling this color around for 15 years, and first time it’s really shown out. You just never know!

I taught folks to hold it still in brushpiles before livescope . I would hand them a pole with a jig and tell them hold it out in the air. The jig will shake just a little no matter how hard you try on the end on a long pole. Here if they don't take the jig , seldom ever move it and make them bite . Actually seen too much movement run them off .

I fish some ugly jigs at times, but as a jig tier, my mantra is life is too short to fish an ugly jig ....not counting the beginning stages of learning to tie your own stuff, thats different. lol

Those different types and colors of jigs have caught a lot of us.

It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!
