They sure are scrappy! I catch a lot of “slabs” this size…
When the little crappie show up in the spring , it for sure is a signal , some might argue ,some might agree , it makes no never mind to me.
Do little ones deserve equal press is the question?
I say yes for sure , because everyone can ketch crappie in the spring and some will be over sized fish no doubt , but not everyone can ketch the weee lil ones .........just saying
no onto the signal part , in very typical spring patterning ,the really large over sized whoppers show up early , followed closely by a herd of real nice fish with about zero under sized fish in the mix.
then as the spawn begins to strengthen , a few smaller fish show up as the numbers of fish in shorter water grows .
about mid spawn it goes sideways and you have no idea what might get on your jig , might be a late whale or a last years hatch and they might even be side by side .
as the spawn moves along less and less big fish and lots more so so fish with lot's of small fish show up in the mix .
at some point only smalls with an occasional nice fish becomes the norm and then off they go to towards the post spawn venue.
of course some will disagree with me and the world is full of the doubting thomas types for sure , but to be just as sure it is what it is .....
so in an effort to better educate the less than educated crappie chaser types , I want to take a moment to give some equal press to the lil ones too .....and
yes I might even ketch them wee lil nipper ones by the lil short hairs on them lil chins too ....
K A B O O M !
p.s. the freedom part is when they get a pitch back into the drink for being a dink ......

Those are whoppers compared to the ones I catch at one lake. They just don't grow much at that lake, too many competing for limited amount of food. Too small to even clean.
Can you say Fish chips...

Round About to the point as usual but a very accurate point you made. Great post, the Great Tamale Fryer Ketchn has spoken.
I agree with almost all of that and if I could add too it some lakes have room to spread out and I have seen covered marinas with small fish at one end getting gradually bigger towards the best habitat. Early is the best time to get a 3lb fish though.
