I had that happen a few spawns back and I was using a telescopic cane pole, which I have no ‘sperience with. Dropped the jig, thump and set the hook. As soon as I saw her I’m sure my jaw fell open and all her weight hit the jig and boink- she was gone. She was where the tree was close to the bank. I jigged a few smaller ones from the branches and finally went back to see if she’d play again. Exact same scenario played out that time too. She was probably the biggest I’ve ever had on in FL. THAT was a good spanking I took that day. Sorry you didn’t get yours either.

crappie in the spring are especially likely to bite again if they get off within minutes or even a day or so later in the same spot , lost a truly really stupid big crappie one time at another spot off the bank and went back EVERY day for a week trying to get that one to give me a second chance , that fish made this fish look so so , thought for sure it was bass when I hooked it .....
made me right sad to lose it and never see it again .....had a few bad dreams over it , not kidding

If it makes you feel any better as my brother in law says. I seem to have the luck of always catching the largest crappie every trip. But he will tell you I also have the talent to loose the biggest one as well. Last time at Jourdan River I snagged probably my personal best in that river that appeared to be about 16 plus inches . As he said she looked like an over inflated football, black crappie.
She made it in the boat before breaking line, brother in law jump out of his seat to capture her but she made it back to the depths for another fun day on the water. Oh well that’s what makes this sport so fun and makes us can’t wait till we get back on the water. By the way Rojo she’s still in there unless somebody else got her.

Reminds me of my Ketchn my almost 4th 3 pounder about this time of year when fishing shallow with 18 foot rod and she just flopped off.

It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!

if it were really important to me , like I was pro or something , yeppers ,,,,
but as you might well know , I travel a less complex path ....
a rod , a few jigs in my pocket and off I go ....sometimes I carry a 5 gallon bucket too...
but that is not all that often
