    Default Braid

Good morning all. For anyone who fished with braided line, do you put a mono backing on also? I was told to use it on my bass rod and use at least 30# braid. Just curious if you use a backing and a higher pound test?

I back with some mono so the braid doesn't spin. Not sure why you would need 30# braid unless its for a flipping rod and your pulling out of heavy cover.

I don’t fill entire spool with braid using mono as a filler. And I used to use 20lb braid, but past number of years backed down to 10 pound braid with even a couple of my spinning outfits with 4 and 6lb. Trolling cranks I have landed stripers, hybrids, bass, walleye and cats (flatheads) with a couple going 20lbs or more, as long as you retie your bait when needed, braid is pretty hard to break. Even with long lining jigs I never use over 10lb on spinning reels. If the lighter weights make you feel uncomfortable, 20lb power pro is super hard to break.

I back my braid with mono to avoid the line spinning on the spool and to extend the use of the braid. I use the braid for two years and reverse it and use it for another 2 years. You can spool two or three reels with a spool of braid.

I use 2 pound diameter braid on my dock shooting rods. I fill the whole spool with braid. When it gets worn put I swap ends and respool. Then you can remove the first worn out section. Add backing to fill the spool back up.

In clear water i use 15lb. hi-viz yellow diawa j braid x 4 with a 10lb. mono leader. In dirty water i could care less about a leader & if breaking one off i just fish the remaining straight braid.

All my spinning rods have mono backing then 75 yds of 8-10 lb braid, swap ends when it gets worn we fish clear water so use a6ft leader 4-8 lb depending on clarity and fish more for jig action than fish seeing
