Default Note to Humminbird and MinnKota users

As our equipment gets more technical, many of us are remiss about updates.

We were on Grenada a couple of years ago and my Ultrex I-pilot link trolling motor went stupid on me. It was like it had a mind of its own when running on cruise control. I finished the trip on all manual settings.

When I got home and starting to diagnose the problem. I found my motor had several updates available. Honestly, I didn’t even know it could be updated! The updates fixed the stupid.

After this episode, I started reading everything I could find and watched a ton of tech videos on updates. With Rickie’s help, we have recently updated every piece of Humminbird and MinnKota gear on my boat. Bluetooth updates are available from your phone but I still feel more comfortable with the SD card upload. My boat is set up on the One Boat Network so all my updates are done on one of my Helix units. Ultrex, Mega 360, Mega Live, Target Lock, Raptors, and three Helix units are all networked together. I can control any of my units from my Helix’s.

I’m purposely slow with updates so I can let others proof the update for issues. Believe me, a problem update will be called out on social media, YouTube, or the Internet forums quickly. That said, the updates I’ve used the last couple of years have made my fishing life much easier.

Maybe I am miss reading it but if you update one helix and all three are networked does it update the other two helix unit or do you have to update them separately?. I've always updated mine separately but that would save time if I could do them all together.

You have to do each one separately, me personally never update if my units are working the way I want only time I do update is if their is something in the update I need.

    I know I’m a knuckle dragger.
But I’m slow to update too.
That put me into agreement with
MR D, about waiting and seeing how it goes. I had a 787 and 797 on old boat, when new I was pleased with the 2D on the 787 running through universal sonar on a Terrova. But I blindly installed every update, and it got worse every time. Fix one minor problem and totally ruin something else. So I’m still reluctant if I’m happy with how something is working.

Some Garmin users complain that updates messed up their units . I have one for livescope never been updated from day one . Think it is going on year 5 .
