This has probably been asked before but, can a guy catch crappie with an underspin when water temp is below 40 degrees? Thx…..

I can't say that I have, but if I can catch them on a regular jig in that water temp range ... then I don't know why you couldn't catch them on a Road Runner. I would think a 1/32oz marabou Road Runner would be the better choice, as it could be retrieved at a slower speed ... thus giving the fish time to react.

I love the roadrunners. They cover a lot of water, and catch fish for me.

Lol! Pappy….I agree with you but honestly never tried an underspin in cold water but I will soon. The hair jig is a good idea I believe. You say regular jig, you mean one w/o a blade, correct? I know crappie will bite in cold water cause I ice fish for them. I will try I guess and see what happens. Thx!

I don't use blade baits for crappie until water temps get above 50 degrees but I've seen others catch crappie fishing a road runner with 6' of ice along the shore. Worth a try but cold water fish are lethargic and a slow moving bait works better.

vertical is the keyword , it is very very unlikely a crappie will chase something in that water temperature , nothing in the way of a potential food item would move fast and they are hard wired that if it moves fast it is likely not food and possibly a predator in cold water temps.
but if it were "put on a crappies nose" per say and held very still . my guess is one could ketch them with one ....
never tried it myself.
casting and retrieving is not the way to hit crappie in water that cold anyway , not matter what you use ....just saying

Water temps are 37-39 degrees right now and i have been pitching my minnow head spinners to schooling fish and have been doing well the key is a slow retrieve.

I agree the cold water slows them down. Bugman, is that an underspin you’re using? Can you post a pic? Thx for the input…

Yeah, that "regular jig" I was referring to having used in cold water was a tube jig. That just happened to be the main jig body style I was using back then.
