When I bought my previous Excel Storm Cat, the owner of the company (Glenn) asked to fish with me out of it. As we both are inclined to do, Rickie and I had made several “modifications” and he wanted to see them and have me explain why we did what we did and how.
One thing I told him I wish the boat had was lift shocks on the rod boxes. Now my rod boxes rarely see rods but I do like them to stay open when I’m digging around in them, looking for something I know I put in there. I keep multiple auto inflate PFDs and such in there.
Glenn said why don’t you get some of the support springs for the lids. I had zero idea what he was talking about. After some online research, I bought and installed a set. Those things are the berries!
Rickie and I just installed a set on the Bay Pro. I bought them on Amazon for less than $20 for the pair. Open the lid and they support it. Go to close the lid, pull on the spring sideways and it folds up inside. Easy install!
Thought this might help some other old farts who get tired of knots on our head or bruises on our arms from lids shutting on them.
You can thank me later.

Great Idea. Mine naturally stay open, but I can see where this would be a big help if it did not.
My center rod box has shocks but the side storage boxes do not. I am going to try this. Thanks

Those look awesome and I feel a bit better having heard your review about how well they work. I've been pondering those on Amazon for my rig... just haven't ordered them yet.
Thanks for sharing and the "deck-lid-holder-upper" review.

The rod/gun box I bought used for my jon boat had one on it. I converted the box into my live well.
I really like the spring thingy. I also bought a set off amazon for some other lids on boat. Just haven't installed them, as the lids open past vertical and stay open on there own. If they didn't they would definitely have the springs installed. I don't know who came up with the idea for them but it's a great idea that works well.

Thanks for sharing this! My tracker had them and I might consider doing it to my Bay Pro as well.

Definitely interesting
The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along
Good post.
I generally like support springs more than the shocks, as they last years and years without issues.
