This is my reply when asked "Where did I catch all those fish?"
Strictly a bank angler but it happens there all the time as well. Start catching when they aren't and pretty soon you have an extra shadow or three. Pretty soon no room for me to even cast. Lost a big trout last year to one of these clowns when he cast over my line while I was fighting the fish and it got all tangled and lost the fish. Wouldn't have kept it but would have been nice to have gotten a couple pics. I think he did it on purpose. I told him You s__k and I left. Outcome would have been different 20 years ago, guy would have been swimming.

I'm guilty of being on the water a tremendous amount and noticing boats in a particular spot every trip of checking to see why. But following someone around just to see their spots I have never done. I spent 2 entire years using a Humminbird 899 to record every coastal river in Mississippi going 3 miles an hour. Lots of Bud Lite Limes were consumed in that quest. After making very high quality recordings I used HumViewer to play back the recordings making my waypoints to return and investigate. This put me in the 2000+ Crappie a year club. Just like going to get a higher education my 2 years of effort has been paying maximum returns for the last 15 years. The same two trees I took Bon Temps to was discovered in that first 2 year mapping effort. A lot of sinker Cypress never moves.
Never followed anyone, been followed for sure, have for sure went back to where someone had out a marker or was staring at that LS for a fortnight after they left said location
