Slab Sam Rayburn Reservoir can produce some good ones.
Bon Temps & I fish Tidal Rivers not Lakes. That being said I very regularly catch 15in Crappie year around. Bon Temps has seen my coolers with his own eyes. 15-16in fish are more common than most Crappie anglers around here know because they do not know how to catch them regularly. What I'm trying to say is the locals here Do Not fish for big Crappie so they catch them as a by-catch where December-February I fish for River Monster Slabs. The difference is a 15in river Crappie won't weigh close to 2lbs because they swim in current 25 days a month or more. The lack of weight is well offset by the increase in quality flavor. A crappie caught in a flowing estuary always tastes better, is firmer, cleaner inside when you fillet (no huge graphite gut bags to smear all over the fillet). I'm looking for 14in+ fish to fit my definition of a Slab, y'all have all read my post before there are only 2 classifications to me - TACO or ALMONDINE. Well to be a Slab it Must be a ALMONDINE, of sizable proportions, both fillets will hang off a regular dinner plate when placed together like the posts you've seen me make, especially Ketchn's Potato Chip posts. Just my . Tis The Season of the SLAB!
Our local lake being a river lake cycles every few years. About 4 years ago numbers were down but we caught some strings of good fish . Hope this spring or the next will see the size go back up . Our mostly White Crappie are pigs . A 15'' in spring will go 2.25 lbs . Here is one string with 13 over 2 lbs with biggest 7 at 15.98 lbs on my Rapala digital scales .
