a granny knot if it's 4 lb mono ,but a shallow spool reel and some 6 will cure that ,,,,,just saying
When I fish with 4lb mono I want to conserve line. So when I want to put on new line, I like to keep about half of the old line on. What is the best knot to use to attach the old line to the new line. In the past I have used a double uni knot but I might of used too many wraps, because it came out bulky and ended up being a problem. Thanks

You might try a Albright knot, the main thing is to keep the knot at the base of the spool when you wind it back on so it doesn't interfere with the line and leave a bulge in the middle or top of the spool.

As cheap as mono is I just respool the whole thing.
Because some of my fishing rods have micro guides.

I started using an Alberto knot to tie mono leaders to braid, now I use it anytime I'm joining two lined together. when tied right it makes a very small knot. It seems most folks use seven wraps each direction when tying it, but I only use five and haven't experienced any failures.

I also use 4Lb mono on my fav rod. I also have some braid that I am trying out. I keep a spool of hi-vis mono in my boat. If my reel gets dangerously shot on line while fishing I just tie new line to the shot line on the reel with a granny knot and re-spool from there. A small knot deep on the spool doesn't make a bump and no worry about it getting stuck in the rod eyes. The knot experts may have better knots for this but I am definitely not a knot expert, lol
Now if I ever hook a crappie that pulls that much line I may change my mind!
