I have always used a double uni. If your topshot is half the spool , it should not cause any problems. all my reels are filled about half way with mono,
then braid on top. If the knot starts to be a problem , it is time for more braid.

When adding small diameter (2#) line to the backing line , I tie a knot using a three turn improved clincher knot to each line for a small knot . It just has to hold the lines together under the primary line . With 4# try a two wrap .
When spooling new line , I hand wrap four or five wraps over the knot at the top of the spool .
    Never had any issues .
On my 1000 size reels , I’ll usually do halfway with my backing line , that usually gives me about 125-150 yards of 2# primary line .

Alberto Knot | Uncle Jim Tool | JR Fishing Tools & Accessories
I'm in no way affiliated with this tool but the Uncle Jim tool for tying an alberto not is pretty cool. Bought one on a whim and liked it so much bought 2 more one for each boat and one that I gave to my fishing partner. Some of you may nimble enough to tie this without help but straight out of the box watching a short video I was able to tie a perfect knot in a few seconds. Pretty cool tool for 20 bucks IMHO. Scott

I’ve had good luck with a two or three turn surgeon’s knot narrow profile. I take great care lubing and snugging the knot down.

Uni to Uni it fine. It's been working for you. Just retie it again and wet it and pull slow. Put on your readers and watch it twist into place. 3 wraps each side is fine. If it still acts up, cast out to access the knot and put a wrap of electrical tape over it, like the baitcaster guys do sometimes.

I want to tank you guys... had never heard of the Alberto knot... had to learn it! I do like it but old fingers and eyes makes some knots a bit testy for me, LOL

Thanks for your response. Deep in the spool definitely. I'll do the granny knot.

Thanks Skeeter . not too eager to learn the Albright knot since I've generally had no problem with double uni. Its easy to tie and for crappie fishing i limit it to 5 wraps which keeps the bulk down. Will try the granny knot for the reel connection
