Default How to Ketch crappie from the bank ,,,,part 1

In somewhat of an effort to simplify the art of bank ketchn for crappie , I am going to post a few ...how to threads .
This part consists of where to look when you are on the bank and hoping to locate them as a simple guidelines .
Remember this though , there are no hard fast rules on crappie from the bank .
A week or so ago the river came up after the big rains and ran water . This action typically moves cover from place to place in the river . So what might have been good may not your next visit . Hit a spot I thought there were fish yesterday and not a peck , so before I left I spied a nice log jam up against a walk over bridge .
It wasn't there 2 weeks ago , and I never hit that spot before , but it sure looked good at a distance ,so I went down there and gave it a look.
The wind was blowing lightly and the shade was gone off that spot , but none the less it looked like crappie might want to be in that spot to me.
Set your float rig fairly shallow to start with when you are hitting the unknown. Crappie often rise to the bait anyway and it will most assuredly keep your jig off whatever lies below better than a deep setting to start with.
About 36 to 48 inches deep is a great way to explore cover .
Now keep in mind this , as a bank person the cards are somewhat stacked in favor of the crappie , The best way to hit a log jam like this is from above it and dipping down into it . You are only alllowed to jig the perimeter from the bank unless you like losing floats and jigs .
Cast up stream into the wind and let mother nature take you set up to the edge of said cover and let it "walk" slowly by the outer edge of the cover .
We employ a berkley gulp brand crappie nibble in most cases to our jig and to be VERY sure , NO MATTER who says otherwise it matters BIG ! No nibble , No bites ....it is really that simple .
This spot was too steep to stand so I sat down and went to work .
FIRST cast until I left 45 minutes later I got bit EVERY single pitch !
You will lose a fish or 2 on steep banks on the lift and you may or may not find larger fish , but to be VERY sure some beats none in crappie lip poker .
The mix of fish I encountered was around 50 50 bluegill and crappie on this visit and even though it was a bit long of a walk and a tad bit precarious , it was very nice to get so many bites right in a row .
So keep thse pointers in mind the next time you are looking for crappie from the bank .
    KABOOM is the word btw
P.S. 7 foot Tica ultralite , 6 lb. clear mono , a 1/32 with lots of sparkles in the sunshine was the ticket .
luck to ya on your next crappie from the bank trip my firends

Amazing how many fish were stacked up in that one piece of structure. That's a honey hole. Hit it hard, next good rain and it might be gone.
