Would say both are used. Boat layout or space for the battery / batteries may dictate which is used. I would tend to lean toward 2 12 volts. That way I have a little more versatility

I use the single 24 volt and I am very happy with it. I don't do tournaments and only fish for about 5 hours so it suits my need

My choice would be 2 12 volt. That way if your starting motor battery ever dies you can jump it from one of them. But if I had space considerations I would go with the 24 volt.

FYI, paralleling 2-12 volt batteries only produces 12 volts. 2-12 volt batteries in series gets 24 volts.

After reading Rickie's link, I want to add some info for my reason for the question.

I plan to buy a new boat. I am trying to decide on my choice of trolling motor. 55# thrust 12v or a 70# thrust 24v. This thinking brought me to the thought of batteries. The price of 1 12v battery looks more attractive than 2 or 1 24v. So... I am just curious about y'alls preference in configuration. Thanks for all the expert help

Ive got a 36v motor and run 1 (well I have two total) 36v batteries. No issues. If youre looking at adding 12V lithium, or even a 24v, shoot me a PM and maybe I can help.

Well this will sound crazy but I got a new boat and I run 6 batteries in it. The boat came with 3 lead acid 12volts. two for trolling motor and one for everything else. I added 54 AMP Lith for all my electronics connected with Sea Clear wiring harness.. I then added two more 54 AMP for trolling motor back up and can switch over if needed.
