I would spray with oil. Here is a video I found that might help.
Help me out. Bought 1st air fryer. Any tips for doing crappie fillets? I don't normally use batter, but then, I've always deep fried. Usually just pat dry, dust with cornmeal, and seasonings.
Do I need any oil in fryer? My fillets are skinned.
Also try Panko bread crumbs in place of cornmeal ...

I spray with Avocado oil. I do a sticky batter then dust with fish fry. Using a Ninja Flat Air Fryer works better for me than the Ninja Basket fryer we have. The basket works great for frozen fries and stuff like that. You have to use some kind of oil. I bought a hand spray bottle from Amazon that has a Fan spray pattern.

I've only cooked frozen breaded fish in the air fryer. I usually deep fry after dipping filets in egg and Zatarain's batter. I don't like smelling up the house with grease. I'd like to find a recipe for the air fryer also

My only attempt with the air fryer turned out badly. the fish were OK , not nearly as good as deep fried. I used the Louisiana brand fry mix,
and the cornmeal got sucked up into the fan. Fan is now very loud. I figure it is just a matter of time before it goes out.
If I don't deep fry , I now just pan sear with a little olive oil and Tony Chachere's seasoning.
good luck

since we have a lot of crappie I suggest trying different times and temps on your air fryer and simply experimenting. we have powerxl and it's been awesome on everything we do but usually just use the basket fryer I have. planning on trying this simply for the ease of use and not smelling up the house with grease.
video was nice but soaking in milk is not neccessary and her not using a simple plastic bag with breading in it which does a great job of coating fish.
tons of ways to do this and try recipes on cdc website. the parmesean crappie especially is great for those that don't want to fry.
