I'm told the tend to ride a bit rougher and wetter for the driver. I've never been in one myself, just what I've read. The rough ride can be made easier on the back by a seat that offers some suspension.
Thinking about purchasing a 16 ft 40hp stick steer aluminium. What cons have you experienced?

If you travel at speed you’re going to get wet if the water is just a little choppy and it don’t take much chop to kill your back. I solved the back problem by getting a suspension seat. Still would get wet in a lot of water conditions but I loved the stick steer. I fished out of it for 7 years and sold it last year. Not because I didn’t like it but I moved and am now mostly fishing a trout river. It was a full V and not conducive for a trout river. If I were to fish flat waters again I would get another stick steer as long as it was equipped with a suspension seat.

In my opinion the pros outweigh the cons by a lot. I fish mainly river only, not trout rivers, so I don’t get into much chop like Alphahawk mentioned, at least not like what you can on a lot larger body of water. It can still get rough at times but more times than not it is pretty smooth. Having all my controls within arms length and not having to get up and go from one end of the boat to the other is well worth putting up with a little rough times. I would definitely like to upgrade my seat like Alphahawk did his one day though but I wouldn’t let it hinder me from purchasing another if I were in the market. Between my dad’s boats and mine, I have been in a stick steer for over 30 years. I have a 16 ft Xpress with a 50hp Yamaha, have been in it for almost 7 years now.

I had a G3 SS. I liked it a lot. Easy to load and unload. Great for long poling or jug fishing. Mine had a Yamaha 50hp 4 stroke. It rode smooth in a chop or taking waves. The cons would be storage, like for heavy jackets or bibs. If you fish winter mornings, it's a cold ride. You catch all the wind, and if it's raining, oh boy. If you bass fish with long rods and 2 people, be careful not to hit each other. Not much floor space for big tackle boxes.
I could get 33-34 with 2 people. 8 gallon tank and 2 batteries. But that was wide open. It was a 2008.
If you fish by yourself most of the time you will love it.

I had a 16’ sea nymph, now owned by Lowe. Very basic and a 25 hp Johnson. 22 mph was top end. A 40lb power drive TM wasn’t quite big enough but I never did upgrade it. Another vote for the. Suspension seat, my lower back and big water was one of the main reasons I sold it. I missed it every day after I sold it. If you think it’s the boat for you and you don’t run big windy waters much, it’s probably the boat for you.

If you fish open waters and have to run a few miles to get to your fishing hole i Would avoid it.
I own a 18x56 Alweld with a 75hp Mercury. Most days I absolutely love it. I fish mainly narrow creeks and rivers and am fortunate enough to be a pick a ramp close by to where I am headed. But there are days I need to travel a bit on the main lake and it can be irritating. I still travel it but 15-20 is about all i can do. It fishes really well by myself and when people fish with they say they are really comfortable. But they cant feel the chop when im on open water

I have the Royal 169SS and is IMHO the best stick steer I've ever been in. Have a 70hp Yamaha 4 stroke and it handles rough water better than any aluminum. It's a heavy boat but run's great 35mph 2 people and though it's not the only boat I have I would NEVER get rid of it. The most comfortable boat I've ever fished out of. Not going to tell you it rides like a Ranger but as for as stick steer go it's the Cadillac IMHO . They are proud of them but bought mine new in 2015 and was worth every penny. Scott
