    Default About the blues

Many years ago I found a fella on the water dipping jigs , I was about done with a box full when we met up in the heavy timber , said he was struggling to get bit and I offered up a spot and advice on how to hit it .....
it was an old horse apple tree and I wasn't really hitting that tree that day , but knew full well it was stacked with fish .
told him to keep the jigs about 10 foot down in 17 fow and try that there tree .
met him a few days later again at that lake and he was on THAT tree .....said WOW thank you so much , limited out on that one tree fast after you left the other day .....
next thing you know he is determined to give me some of his handties , said he only uses handties and only ties ONE color !
no paint head , blue body , short chart tail and RIDICULOUS long flash in the tail , like 3 inches long ....
thought wow those look stupid , no wonder he is struggling to ketch fish and left him at the task ....
bet he misses lots of fish that hit that silly long tail instead of the jig body ....
well let me say this about that , used them quite a few times after that day and did exceptionally well most of the time with them .
in synopsis it does not surprise me to see DSJ with a box full of the blues , just saying .......
    KABOOM is the word btw

Good story. I just can’t limit myself to one color, I’ve seen it many times where a color changed made them bite.

Blue with white football head was a good choice for the catching a few years ago and you just got me to thinking l need to get out the old boxes of hand ties and give them another chance. Lol

It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!

They have been my go to color of choice. For one reason. They work. It may not be the best color that I could be using, but it produces consistently enough that it is a safe bet for me. (Disclaimer) I believe that the blue back with the silver belly looks more natural. Just like real bait fish are darker on the back and lighter on the belly. The real reason for putting the box together was to group sizes and profiles together in that color. As I have noticed on fish that have slowed down on a particular dock turn on again with a size or profile change. Getting the size and profile close to what they are naturally feeding on certainly does seem to help me. I fish some pretty muddy water at times. Plus I am fishing deep in the shade of docks.

this is me , yesterday I went in with a really pretty blue jig , managed 1 fish and 2 other hard bites and missed one of them and hooked the other for a split second ...
made me sad that was it and said ,,,,,maybe just try a pearl on a white head and dip a jig a little bit more before I hit the trail .....
AND just like that .....Ketchn was in the KABOOM show big time ....
Makes me pretty darn happy when Johnny B Ketchn is Ketchn for sure

know lots of folks that love blue ice , some lakes you best have a few with ya , had a moment in time in the winter last year that IF the jig wasn't predominantly blue it WAS not getting bit .....

That’s a good observation. Maybe Dock Shooting Jack is on to something ‘cause he says the blue has always been a great producer for him.

the read was about how well they can actually see , and it went into cooler water temperatures and how their eyesight becomes enhanced significantly in those conditions and the observation that blue was most the most visible color to a crappie was in said article ....
not sure if science is right , but to be sure blue can cure the blues in some spots for darn sure
