Wow! Y'all are fast. I just got a text the article was up and Dave already has it posted. The Single Pole article is fantastic, as a Hard Core Single Poler that article has Gold in it. Pumpkin Month article was a Super Read too.

I'm taking a Crappie.com member Monday for a clinic on locating, positioning, and catching Crappie just like the article. Hopefully we will get some good pictures too.

Few know it but the Pearl river if you stretched out is several hundred miles long. As it flows south to where I live it runs into Saltwater. The Saltwater shuts down the Crappie's southbound travels right in my backyard. They backup within a 10 mile stretch above the salinity line that has 4 communicating rivers for a few miles down to 3 communicating rivers for several miles. This Delta is a Buffet for the Crappie holding them for spawning. As far as fishing "The Spawn" you have very little access to the Crappie because this same Delta floods to the point you can't fish it right when they are spraying eggs. The last few years it has taken a severe beating from Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. I personally am out in the Delta year around when the water is down. The last 2 years we had a banner spawn so our populations are getting back to the Pre-Storm era levels. After Hurricane Katrina the Golf Courses all over around here had dead Crappie laying on the greens. Tropical events are our worst enemy as a Crappie Angler.

If I have to keep my jig 8 to 10 foot above the main group I'll be holding it n the air!

Most fish I catch year round are no deeper than 10ft, 12 to 15 fow at the most. I will try above the school for sure.

I hear that. When I'm fishing 5ft of water I usually can pull the first couple of fish within eye sight of my jig. Interesting to see them come up to eat the jig. The most important thing is to tease the fish into biting above the others and once hooked really pull them out of the water with as little splash as possible. Ketchn turned me on to fishing small hooks in cover to reduce snagging, I switch to smaller / lighter tackle as I fish deeper into structure. On Ross Barnett I use a Wally Marshall Signature Series rods from Lews with the handle cut down 6 inches. I think Mr Marshall's got it right on the actions for getting fish up in a hurry to prevent wrapping around submerged structure. Using #1 Matzou Sickle hook 1/16oz Jigheads I reach over the top of the spot doing a quiet presentation, no splash only wetting 1ft of line. Kinda like waiting on the Catsup to come out of the bottle I give the fish time to rise. A slow lift of the rod tip followed by a quick drop of the rod tip every minute or so seems to be the ticket. I try to see slack in the line on the Tip drop. Something about the slow rise / quick fall when the jig sits a moment that is when the commitment time happens. On the Pearl here at home I start out with a Rojo Grande 9wt fly rod with 15# Slick 8 braid line with a larger hook jighead ( usually a #2 but with the hook bent out a bit more) to really jerk them out of the water but switch to a 8wt with a smaller hook jighead as I go deeper. I used to run and gun from recruitment spot to recruitment spot but have learned to be patient if the fish are present. My buddy Cajun Ray says they all stand around and vote on who's biting next. I learned he's right because one of the Crappie always bites.
