A lake I hit recently has a seriously big reputation for little fish .
The sandbass run small and thin as do the crappie most of the time .
The sandbass guy at the boat ramp was telling me what I already knew about lucky to find one over 10 inches . It never seems to have lots of larger fish in the mix and or none sometimes at all.
There are times when you bust some nice ones but they are few and far between.
So what do you think ? Its a well established impoundment and been around a good while . Lots of cover , timber , corp piles , bridges and docks . The lake below it produces solid fish , and it baffles me why it never has a solid number of good fish coming out of it ?
    What say ya .....?
P.S. I think it's lack of enough shad myself, to support the general population.

Sounds like lack of forage and predators.

Over populated with smaller fish. Needs to be thinned I'd say. Would allow for them to grow larger and not compete for the same food.

Could be from a lack of forage to grow them out or a lack of suitable predators to thin them out. Some large Catfish would start reducing those numbers

Sounds like overpopulated. I know a place the owners want you to get rid of small crappie. They have ravaged his bass. You can ketch small fish every cast. Hardly ever ketch a kaboom. His lake is probably not as big as what you are talking about, though.

I worked at a place that had an overpopulated pond. It had thousands of stunted, potato chip to palm sized bream. I used to catch as many as I could in the evenings after work on ultralight tackle, then feed them to the wildlife. I met a guy who said he wanted as many bream as I could catch for catfish bait. I rigged up a couple coolers with aerators, so they'd keep, and I'd catch as many as I could & get paid for it. It was a sweet deal. We ended up throwing some 4-5 pound bass from the local reservoir in the pond and they grew big pretty fast. The property ownership ended up draining the pond after I went to work at another place, but it sure was fun to fish while it lasted...especially catching those hawg bass on ultralight gear.

I know of a lake that had tons 6-8” very poor fish in it with a very very few 9-10” fish until they started stocking shad now that lake produces lots of solid 11-13” healthy fish with several 14-16 “

If their is a size limit I'd eliminate that and raise the daily limit as well to get more fish out of there. Stock more predators like Bass to thin them out. Not enough predators to help keep the lake in balance.
