Having studied Small Impoundment design & maintenance it always started out with Water Quality. You get water quality a few ways but it must come first. Pond Fertilizer takes a 1/4 acre 12ft deep pond from supporting 100#'s of Black Bass or Catfish to 400#'s of Black Bass or Catfish. The water clarity should be no clearer than when your arm is elbow deep you should not be able to see your fingers moving. If too clear undesirable vegetation growth occurs. Pond dye fixes that. Also when fertilizing caution must be taken not to put too much as a Bloom can occur and overtake the entire pond. Fertilizer gets the Zooplankton growing which feeds everything else up the food chain. To prevent Thermocline establishment aeration in the pond is needed to keep the water turned over. Toledo Bend is Back in a nuclear way because of 5 years of Tropical Storm runoff pooling in the Lake. Same scenario, the runoff is full of fertilizer. If the lake in question lacks nutrients (fertilizer), clear water, low vegetation, thermocline development, inbreeding, poor turnover, you get poor fish. If they are so inbred (target species of fish) the genes are damaged a fish kill and re-stock is in order. The US Dept of Agriculture has monies for just such projects and depending on how large a project the politicians may need to be involved. Mississippi gets laughed at Nationally by ignorant outsiders for just about anything but our state is in front of this ball and has been fixing these types of Lakes for the last 10 years. Ketchn, great subject and very interesting reading. Heavy harvest can't fix bad genes, fertilizer can fix low weight fish.
interesting thoughts , my vote after hitting it more than a few times goes to a food issue , never see big shoals of shad there , never , lots of bait but its mostly small silversides .....
silversides dont typically grow monster fish as a major food source in these parts ....
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales
Crappie make a great food source for tacos! Jus sayin bro….
