I went from a 40# to a 55# on my 14ft boat and it was well worth the little cost for more thrust. Battery drain was not that much different but holding in the wind is were the switch really shined.
I want to replace the trolling motor on my 12 ft jon boat. I run 40# now but for not much more money I can upgrade to 45#. I don't believe 5# more will be very noticeable in speed but probably more noticeable at battery drain

What I learned about basic transom mount TM’s is pretty simple. The difference between the say 40 and 55 shouldn’t be significant for better drain. Minn Kota has what’s called a maximizer on some of their motors that extends battery life some. Transom mount to deck mount sometimes has differences but some are the same motor on different mounts. Hope you get what you’re after and it does the job for you. I was once told that every 15 lbs of thrust is a horsepower. And be careful if you run wide open to get somewhere. I’ve had the leads get real hot and one melted the insulation off the wire.

I just noticed the invoice for my Motorguide tm. It says Raymarine. What, if any, is the relationship of the two companies?
