    Default Reel Spool Backing

I am sure you all probably have various ways of dealing with a reel spool that has higher capacity than you want/need. Wel I was rummaging through one of my tackle boxes today and discovered a spare spool for my Pfleuger President 20 size that I didn't remember I had. I have been using Varvas Twitchmaster 4# line which only comes in 100 meter spools and this will not fill my President spool. So I was thinking about how to back the spool so as to reduce line capacity. I didn't want to lay in any other line as backing so I was contemplating what to use. Duct tape, rubber bands and other fillers came to mind.

Well along comes the commander-in-chief and asked what I was up to. After I explained a little she suggested possibly using the narrow green velcro tapes she uses to tie her plants to stakes. So after giving it some thought I figured why not try it. The tape turned out to be slightly too wide for the spool. But it was easy to cut down with ordinary scissors. After doing so it was easy to wrap it around the spool arbor as many times as necessary to fill the spool as needed. It turns out it worked quite well.

You may have other preferences for filling up a spool prior to winding on your main line. I just thought I would throw this out there as an alternative that worked for me. My thanks to my better half for the suggestion. She's not a fisherwoman (is that a word) but she puts up with me and supports what I like to do.

I use some old mono as backing for a reel I have PowerPro 10/2 braid on. No problems encountered. And, yes, I had heard of using elec. tape as a backing material, but the old mono was of no further use and destined for the recycle bin, so it was the best choice for my purpose at the time.

This tape, being velcro, doesn't leave any adhesive residue behind when you remove it. And it is just about as easy to put on exactly how much you need. I've used old mono in the past too. But that is easiest when the spool is already loaded with it and all you have to do is tie on the new stuff and load it up. I know folks have used lots of different ideas but I hadn't read any mention of this gardener's velcro tape before so I thought I would give it as an alternative.

That’s pretty much what I use. I had some old 6 lb test line and it worked great backing up 2lb line.
