Actually ... the ATS 15 is supposed to hold 350yds of 10# test mono (1050ft), so I'd take (at least) 50' of line off if you're using 10# test mono.
If you're using another # test of mono, or using braid for the main line ... check here for capacity : Shakespeare ATS™ Trolling Reel - Pure Fishing

I’m not familiar with that brand, but I would look at the end play on the spool, if it’s got a ton of side to side play, maybe can be tightened up and centered?

I do like to keep mine full, years ago I got serious enough to check my counters against a 100 foot steel tape. For purposes of relating to the precision trolling depth charts and depth of fish I was marking on sonar.
Found out they had to be brim full to read right. Did start at that time using some bargain bin 20 lb mono to fill about 3/4 of the spool first. I like berkley vanish on top, stuff is kinda

My dad was having the same problem with them. He was getting slack at the spool from wouldn't holding the spool with his thumb when letting line out. I tightened the spool up so it wouldnt free wheel as bad. I am not sure exactly how much line they hold but I always stop 1/16 to 1/8 inch from the end of the spool. He still gets in there from time to time but no where as much. It don't seem to happen to me and they are the same reels and same line. I use 6lb line on them when pushing jigs and braid when pushing cranks...

I use berkley big game from Academy so the spool comes in 1500 yds . Figured it was as cheap as any filler line . Going to scale back to 1000 ft. Also going to tape line at 850 ft . Always have spool with no slack but the Cabela reels never were a problem but were the larger reels also . thanks for commenting .
