Who’s boating this weekend?
Thinking about going out but don’t know if I want to deal with the craziness on the water. Or just stay home and restring reels etc

FISHING REPORT: ‹Caught two docks, 3 trees and a stump- threw them back!
I've put this on here before, but it's been a while. When my mother was born in 1943, she had four older brothers who were enlisted in the service. Three of them saw combat. One, my Uncle Bick, saw terrible combat while he was stationed at Bougainville in the Philippines. He came back with several medals and told stories of how he was lucky to have come home. He always enjoyed life as long as I knew him......I didn't come along until 1969.
Anyway, to the point. For years throughout the 70's - 90's, pretty much as long as I can remember, we've had a big get-together every Memorial Day weekend at the lake for some good visiting, good eating, good fishing, & good fun. I remember the family renting 3 or 4 cabins on the lake and cousins running & riding bikes everywhere while the men fished & ladies visited or cooked. Then in the evenings and at night would come the big Rook Bird Tournament. Mom & I won it one year.......the whole big thing! Believe me when I say that beating that bunch at a 3-night Rook Bird Tournament was quite an accomplishment. My uncles always tried to do some cheating....."isn't the grass GREEN outside" or "I was using a YELLOW crappie jig today." You had to watch them Stratton Uncles. My wife (girlfriend at the time) won the biggest fish trophy for 1990. She caught a 3 lb. catfish on a cricket. She's still got it on a shelf at home. Big Fun!
The cabins, and all of my uncles & aunts are gone now and my mother is too. My dad is 81 and won't go anymore; I suspect because he's the last of that generation and it's not happy times anymore for him. Several of my cousins are gone too. Last year, there were only 4 of us who went and camped for the weekend. This year, it's down to just me and my cousin Randy. Just the two of us. He's 65 and I'm 53. We gonna grill & chill, he says. We're gonna remember the good times, tell stories, fish a little, grill a little, drink a little, and probably cry a little. We might even play a little dummy-hand Rook Bird, just for old times. Here's Ole Cousin Randy & me from a couple of Spring Breaks ago. He & I always manage to have a good time.
Yall be safe, enjoy the weekend, and remember/think of a veteran and how their sacrifices in the past make it possible for us to do the things that we do here in America.
