    Default Flourocarbon vs Mono

Which line do you fish with and why? is flourocarbon better at brushpile fishing? or maybe a combination like braid mainline and flourocarbon leader? i’m just trying to learn a bit more each time i go out. thanks all!!

I’ve gone to flouro and braid. Braid for my light casting applications because it allows me to cast so far and is much stronger for the same diameter.

For my crankbait line-counter reels I use 12 pound K9 flourocarbon line. It is smaller diameter for same pound test. I have found I am pulling loose many more hung up cranks now than on mono.

I always cast & retrieve. Agree with M R Dux. 10# braid and 6# Flouro. Couple the lines with either an Alberto or Double Uni knot.

Mono is cheaper, pretty forgiving as far as knots go, and more abrasion resistant than braid. It also has more stretch.

Flouro is clear, more sensitive, and more abrasion resistant than any other. It also has a lot more memory and can require special knots, especially in lighter lines.

I have never found flouro to be worth the hassle, I tried some once, was very difficult to get a strong knot with and had a lot of memory. I use either straight mono or braid with a mono leader.

Sensitivity definitely helps when fishing brush, so I only ever use braid for that.

Mono for me , I set the hook like I mean it , need some stretch and run thru line like fast , prefer to keep it cost effective and ketch effective at the same time , run some braid a bit , but not often and only on one or 2 rods of the 6 or 7 I carry in my truck .
Flouro is ok if you don't mind the cost , seems to work ok , used some heavy stuff for a while one time , it was on the clearance rack ....

I like mono. Inexpensive and a variety of choices.

I’ve always read that mono is more abrasion resistant than braid. That statement never seemed true to me. I only light braid on ultralight tackle. I haven’t experienced abrasion/break problems. So I went to visit Mr. Goggle…

    Looks like I was wrong.

SO, I changed my thinking and now I guess I’m correct. It’s good to learn you’re wrong so you can get on the right side the fence.

BUT, when it come to line twist, nothing beats da’ braid. And for that reason I’ll definitely stick with it.

I use 6 lb. mono on jigging poles, 15 lb. braid with a 8 ib. to 14 lb. flouro leader on my crank pulling rods, and straight flouro on the rods I drift and cast jigs with. I'm more likely to catch bigger fish (catfish, stripers, & bass) on the crankbaits, so the heavier leader helps prevent line breaks. The jigs are more expendable and more likely to be fished around cover. I had an experience with small diameter braid biting into the spool, then break, and I lost a good sized striper. So, I've stuck with mono or flouro on smaller reels.
