As has been mentioned, putting the spool into a bucket of water while spooling it onto the reel works well.
As for line twist, it mostly occurs with spinning reels at least when the drag is set light and when your turning the handle nothing is happening, except twisting the line.
If you attach a small swivel on the end of the line and let it run out behind the boat while moving it will remove the coils in the line. It will then be as good as new, at least till you twist it up again.

I've done that, but without anything on the end of the line ... works very well. It's also why I drag my line thru the grass (at home) after stretching the line (after months of non-use).

Twists occur from spinning reels for several reasons: bait spinning in the air during the cast, off centered plastics on your jig during the retrieve, bail not fully retracting when you're reeling in, not to mention spooling it on the reel incorrectly. Those things plus fighting a fish with a loose drag & cranking the reel.

You'll also get birds nests and loose loops around the reel spool from casting a real light lure and retrieving it on semi-slack line & then casting again. Twisted line makes it worse & occur more often.

If Richard Gene says it works, no need to debate it anymore. Just go fishing when you can cause it's good fer you.

I don’t care who does it not only is it not necessary it can really degrade the line. Nylon is like a sponge…soaks up water. Also soaks up the particles in the water. If it is hard water…when it dries it can stiffen your line. And once it does dry the line goes right back to the state before you soaked it. I too used to do this until I learned better. If one is having to soak their line to get it to behave properly you need to buy quality line to begin with….and learn how to put it on correctly. I haven’t had any line issues at all for over a decade.

    Regards

    AlphaHawk,
I am forever searching for the truth. So opposing statements are given consideration. But when considering your point of view, this comes to mind. If getting fishing line wet is detrimental, why is it used for fishing?

    No disrespect intended,
    Danny

Uh oh. Looks like you offended the Richard Gene fanboys.

    Prepare for incoming fire! LOL
