Usually you'll know a 2lbish fish. Smaller fiish under 1.25ish look really similar until you get down to nursery (sub 8") size. IMO from looking at three different screens/scopes

Lots of small & barely keepers look about the size of the jig head unless they turn just right then the sonar reflection gets bigger. However I have caught a bunch that looked no bigger than the jig head & them be keepers too. I think a whole lot of it is how the sonar hits them. I caught several 10 plus inchers Sunday afternoon that looked small on the screen but after boating them they were 10” or a little more.

I prefer setting my forward view at 30 feet for crappie fishing. This distance allows me to see far enough ahead, but also I can tell the size of the Crappie pretty good on the screen. Slabs look like footballs. When you see one you’ll know!

I dropped down to a 1/16th ounce & set back 30 feet & casted past them letting it fall some & retrieved it either above or right through them. I started with a 1/4 ounce that i'd been vertical jigging with just to see & caught some on it but the lighter jig definitely got bit better.

Les funny you said this, yesterday I had to do the same thing. I found a school of fish in shallower water and had to stay out and cast to them. It gets me you can see lots of fish on a spot and you can catch about 10 or so, then no matter what you throw at them they just won’t bite. Is there anything else I can do to catch more of them?

Change up the presentation. Change the bait, change color, try downsizing/upsizing. Give them something different for a little bit then sometimes you can even go back to original bait. Sometimes though they just turn off completely and it's best to move on to another school.

You ever thought about being a bait salesperson?
