    I’m from GA and pronounce it croppie but alot of people here say crappie. IMO croppie sounds better.

    There are many local nicknames. I've told the story where my Grandpa mentioned going fishing for "Newlights", and I thought we were going after some new, exotic fish that I'd never heard of in my preteen age. Then we went Crappie fishing, as per usual, and I realized he was using a really old nickname from his early days.
    Yep pappy a lot of older folks use to call them newlights.
