Man that’s tempting, but I bet shipping would be rough far as we are apart. Probably would be better for someone who could meet in person

I'll get a quote if you'r interested, give me a zip code.

I went and researched that st croix number, I am afraid I jumped to conclusions that we were all on the same page far as pistol grip. A fine rod I’m sure. But what I was speaking nostalgically about was something like my picture here. In my youth they were common on even higher end rods. Never mind me, sorry to bother. Name: IMG_2321.jpg

I have bought a Kast King Zephyr BPS reel and matching rod. I’m watching videos on how to set it up for crappie. There are specialty bearing sets for those reels that are supposed to take them to a new level. I’ve seen Will Brantley of Jenko take a 1/16 oz jig and throw it across the Branson Expo Center. Distance and accuracy are amazing. I’m going to spend my back surgery recovery learning mine.

Sir, can you tell what his rig consists of? Bamboo rod? Reel looks similar to an Abu Garcia baitcast reel. What type of line? (Mono, etc.) Just curious. He casts well.

I’m not sure but I think a highly tuned Abu. His rods are all extremely high end and some of them are of bamboo made by Anglo. Which are around 2 grand when I last checked. I don’t know much about him but do know he is independently wealthy and travels all over Japan fishing. If you hear the bells he wears it supposedly is to ward off bears. I just love to watch him cast.

    Regards

Correction to my previous post: Will Robey is with Jenko and demoed the BFS to me. Will Brantley is the online editor of Field and Stream. Both have been friends for years.

I've got three years' worth of BFS stuff now and enjoy it more and more. Some of my equipment is pricey but nothing like what comes out of Japan. I have a couple of Dobyn's rods and a Jenko Double Down, and they are good, but not my favorites. I have a Chinese knock off fiberglass rod that works really well for small trout. I believe the Japanese master in the video is also using a (high $$ japanese) fiberglass. My favorites are a 25 yr old All Star salt water UL shrimping rod and a Bass Pro $55 lightweight. I believe the US manufacturers are looking in the wrong direction with their thin carbon rods. I even have an old Browning fiberglass medium rod that will throw a light jig forever. In Crappie jigs a 1/32 is about as doable as with a spinning reel, but I seldom throw that weight. My favorite weight is 1/24, and I can throw that or 1/16 as far as I ever need to. I also have the Kast King Zephyr set, and it's pretty good. Don't get suckered into the high$$ Japanese market for BFS crappie fishing. There are a lot less expensive alternatives, especially in rods. The reels are specialized, so good ones are a little more expensive. I also would not go the replacement spools route unless you are trying to compete with the JDM UL market. I use my BFS stuff for all species.

Not to put down any style of fishing but, this just seems like a lot of potential for frustration.
There’s so many better/ easier ways to catch crappie or any pan fish without the hassle.
I’m sticking with my long poles or standard ultralight spin cast gear.
    To each his own ..
