Default Inline ice fishing reel for regular crappie fishing?

I’ve been using the B&M reels for years but a buddy of mine just gave me four inline ice fishing reels that his Dad didn’t want anymore.

Thought it would be a great idea since these actually have a gear ratio that’s not 1:1 like my B&M reels.

I spooled them all up with line and when I pull the lever to drop the lure … they “backlash” line on the spool immediately. Again, I don’t have any experience with these types of reels, but wondering if anyone else has tried to use them for crappie fishing NOT in the ice, but just on a jigging pole?

They're super nice reels - anodized aluminum, and really smooth spool that spins forever. Wondering if I’m supposed to palm the spool while the line is dropping or what? Reminds me of learning to cast a baitcaster reel without a magnetic brake system when I was 5 or 6! The backlash is real! Anyone have experience with this type of reel? Thank you!

What brand are they and what model? Many of them have a magnetic adjustment to provide friction to the spool to prevent backlashing. A picture of the reels would help us to help you.
I use them ice fishing but we normally use a lot less weight than open water jig fishing. What weight jig are using with these reels?
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.

Not to hijack thread but this question brings up another question for me as I have pondered using these reels. The lake I visit most often also has record saugeye and muskie. We do catch these while crappie fishing. Would these reels hold up to that?

I have two of the Eagle Claw inline reels on a couple of 12 inch rods. They work great for single poling. They do have spool tensioners so you don't have to worry about backlashes. It has a drag and large reel handle which I love. Great reels for less than $30.

    Thank you for the help!

They’re Piscifun ICX reels. They don’t appear to have any way to adjust the tension of the spool. They have a really strong drag. I noticed that they do make another model of this reel that does have a magnetic braking system. Oh well, they were free, but not sure how I’d use them other than palming the spool while holding the lever to release the line! Just need another hand and I’d be in business!

You’re not hijacking this thread at all. I welcome any feedback as I really thought these would be great to replace my 1:1 gear ratio reels. I know that my buddy’s Dad has caught 20+ pound pike on these reels, so I think they’d be awesome. But I’d probably get a different model than the ones that I have with a magnetic spool brake or some type of tensioner to eliminate the backlash. I like the idea of these enough to try one with the spool tensioner though. Good luck!
Thanks silverside thanked you for this post

Can always let a finger drag on the spool to slow it down and not backlash

I would really like to see some pictures of these. I've used Solos's in the past and loved them. Maybe try peeling off line the length of the rod then wrapping a piece of electric taped around the reel to stop the line from paying out. Used to do this when I was teaching my son to handle baitcasters.

Do you not tighten the red knob on the side to set the tension?
